Abstract

Nursing has been evolving remarkably as the society and the medical science have changed, so nurses should be grown according to the social and professional needs. Continuous education has been considered as the center of the nursing profession. If each military hospital has to develop and operate its own continuous educational programs for their nursing officers, more efforts and human resources are needed. The development of educational programs and their operational systems for all the nursing officers can achieve the consistency as well as the applicability and financial effectiveness of educations. Therefore, the study was conducted to develop an educational program which can be applied in order to improve nursing officers¡¯ performance ability in emergencies. The results of the study are as follow.
1. According to the results of the survey on nursing officers¡¯ educational needs toward emergency nursing, ACLS was the subject with the highest educational need, and the other subjects of high educational need are emergency drugs, the assessment of emergency patients, the management of bleeding and shock, BLS, the management of mass casualties, the management of respiratory problems, the management of cardiovascular problems, trauma management, and defibrillation. Nursing officers believed that ACLS should be taught through self-learning and performance learning.
2. The educational program for emergency nursing consists of mainly BLS and ACLS, which are highly needed by nursing officers. For the successful accomplishment of the education, nursing officers should study the theoretical contents through self-learning process on line or using a CD in advance, and should be gathered to learn the performance skills for eight hours biannually. The institutes that are appropriate for the program are the Armed Forces Nursing Academy or the Military Capital Hospital. The program manager should supervise nursing officers¡¯ educational accomplishment and evaluate the educational outcome.
3. The study suggests the self-learning contents for BLS and ACLS, which will be utilized on line. The researchers analyzed the teaching contents of 10 subjects related to BLS and ACLS, edited on PPT files, and added the narrations. The simulated scenarios related to ventricular fibrillation(VF) and asytole, which are considered major problems required BLS and ACLS were selected based on the analysis of clinical cases and the AHA algorhithm. The standardized procedures on the scene of the patient with VF or asytole were included in the scenario, filmed, and added the narrations.
The suggestions of the study are as follow.
1. A evaluation tool for the effects of the program should be developed, and a study should be conducted to validate the effect of the program. 2. A study should conducted to deal with the subjects that were not dealt in this study, such as the management of bleeding and shock, the management of mass casualty, trauma management and so on.
